A Clinical Study of 2,3 Diphosphoglycerate in Relation to Hemoglobin Level

Abstract
The role of 2, 3 diphosphoglycerate in red blood cell is very important. It decreases the-affinity of oxygen to hemoglobin thus improves tissue oxygenation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ralationship of 2,3 diphosphoglycerate with age and hemnglobin level. Eighty-three patients in both sexes were investigated. Blood samples were collected between 10 and 30 minutes after induction of anesthesia. The levels of 2, 3-DPG were measured by ultraviolet enzymatic method of Sigma Chemical Company.
The results were as follows:
1. Mean values for male were 2. 79 1. 1 Ipmol/ml (whole blood), 6. 81 2. 86,umol/ml (packed¢¥ cells), 20. 30 8. 57pmol/gm (hemoglobin), and for female were 2. 95 1.20pmol/ml (whole blood) 7. 86 3. 28pmol/ml (packed cells), 23.30 9. 95pmol/gm (hemoglobin).
2. Low level of 2, 3-DPG were seen in second and fifth decades.
3. The level of 2, 3-DPG in smoker was higher than that in nonsmoker.
4. The level of 2, 3-DPG showed inverse relationship with hemoglobin level until 13.1-14.0 gm% of hemoglobin, and increasing tendency thereafter.
